單詞odyssey來源于希臘神話中的英雄奧德修斯 （Odysseus） ， 經過特洛伊戰爭之后 ， 奧德修斯激怒海神波賽頓 ， 海神降臨災禍于他 ， 使他們遇到海難 ， 全軍覆沒 。奧德修斯雖因機智和勇敢逃過一劫 ， 但波賽頓的憤怒未息 ， 使奧德修斯找不到回家的航線而在大海里漂流 ， 歷經了各種奇遇 。


奧德修的妻子不知他的生死 ， 面對著蠻橫的求婚者就只有苦等著丈夫的回來 。最后在諸神的幫忙下 ， 經過十年漂流生活 ， 奧德修斯終于回到家里與他的妻子團聚 ， 并與兒子和忠實的老仆聯手殺死了求婚者 。荷馬史詩之一的《奧德賽》（Odyssey）就講述了奧德修斯的歷險記 ， 后來在英語中 ， 人們用odyssey一詞來比喻漫長的歷險旅程 。
